Kenya Aerotech was established in Nairobi, Kenya in February 1971 by a small group of young enterprising Kenyans who saw the need for a private indigenous aviation ground support services provider at Kenya’s airports. The company started by providing minor services to foreign airlines at Nairobi’s Embakasi International Airport, such as interior cleaning and provision of water. Within a short time, demand for a wider range of services grew steadily and soon the company was involved in loading and offloading of baggage and cargo. Staff members were trained to operate heavy machinery including conveyor belts, pushback tractors and motorised steps, then owned exclusively by airline. By the mid 70s, Kenya Aerotech provided the entire range of ground handling services to almost all foreign carriers flying into Embakasi. When the modern and larger Jomo Kenyatta International airport was opened in 1978, the company had already positioned itself as the premier provider of ground handling services in Kenya. The company became well known at this time for the ability to handle such monumental aircraft as the supersonic Concorde and the amazing double-decked Boeing 747 during their flights to Kenya.
The 1980s saw tremendous growth for aviation in general and African destinations became more attractive for major European and American carriers. Larger aircraft landing at Jomo Kenyatta created the need for more sophistication in equipment and methods of aviation ground services delivery. Kenya Aerotech was right in the middle of this modernisation process and was able to handle any aircraft landing in Nairobi with flexibility and unequalled expertise. The company subsequently expanded its services to Kenya’s second International airport, Moi International Mombasa in 1996 where it has continued to enjoy the highest market share among ground handling companies to date. The coastal city of Mombasa is Kenya’s tourist hub and is strategically important for international charter companies that operate into Kenya. Kenya Aerotech was called upon to provide aviation ground support services at the country’s third international airport at Eldoret when it started operations in 1997 and remains the only ground handling company there to date. The company offers the full spectrum of aircraft ground services from ramp and passenger handling to flight operations, all delivered with efficiency and expertise.
